Football sleep study
Analyzing Sleep and Cognitive Performance in Elite Youth Football Players Over One Season
Partners:

About ThE Study
The University of Zurich and the Children’s Hospital Zurich are conducting research to understand how sleep and brain performance change over a football season in elite youth academy players. We examine how training and matches influence sleep and cognitive performance, and whether better sleep is associated with improved brain performance. A key focus is whether repetitive head impacts across a season affect brain performance and whether sleep may help protect brain health. More information about sleep in elite football here.
For this study, players will install a research app on their smartphone for the duration of one season. The app does not record any content; it only registers the timing of screen touches. From this information, we can accurately analyze sleep–wake patterns and gain insights into cognitive performance. More about the app here.

Study Process

1
Step 1:
Information
If you would like more information about the study, you can download the detailed information and informed consent forms below.
After reading these documents, if you are interested in participating, you may request an online information session using the form below. In that session, we will go through the study procedures again, answer any open questions, and—if you decide to join the study—start the onboarding process.
2
Step 2:
Onboarding
During the online onboarding session, we will help you download and set up the app, and together we will complete a few questionnaires. After that, you simply keep the app running on your phone until July 2027. If you have any questions during or after onboarding, you can contact us at any time.

Step 3:
In-Season Visits
We will have three online (or in-person) check-ins during the 2026/27 season:
Visit 1: August-September
Visit 2: December-January
Visit 3: May-June
During these visits, you will complete brief questionnaires.
